The arrival of warm weather brings fresh opportunities to get outside and have some fun. Across VB, outdoor events are popping up left and right. A local favorite? Open-air markets.
Recently, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge Society participated in Bloom Beauty Bar VA’s 2nd Annual Earth Day Market, a flea market fundraiser with dozens of Earth-friendly vendors selling everything from personal products to home goods and everything in between.
The Society is the official Friends group of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. We were thrilled to have been selected by Bloom for the second year in a row as one of the non-profits to receive a portion of the market’s proceeds. This year Bloom also raised funds for Kate’s Next Door Market.
Leiah Muller, Bloom Beauty Bar VA salon owner and founder of the #youcanBLOOMwithus movement, has an awesome mission and philosophy of philanthropy. Check out her blog post: You can sit with us and why. Leiah and her amazing team regularly host fundraising events to raise awareness for different charities and causes in Hampton Roads. They enjoy holding flea markets to showcase the incredible talent around the community. Check out their fun events! Follow them@BLOOMBeautyBarVA.
Event Coordinator and Creative Director Sam Winfield was our point of contact for the market and was a delight to work with. Sam was organized, efficient, and handled the details with skill. Rounding out the planning crew was Sydney Winfield and Megan Spivey.
This unique brewery in the heart of Virginia Beach serves up tasty ales, ciders, sours, and more. The scenic setting provides the perfect backdrop for gatherings both large and small. From casual get-togethers to more formal occasions, the Farmhouse is a popular spot for all ages. Check out their food truck schedule here and their events page here.
Kate’s Next Door Market (formerly Farmer John’s) is the Farmhouse brewery’s production garden and retail shop and is sited on the same property. They use sustainable biological farming, gardening, and composting techniques to produce healthy fresh foods from their fields. From seeds to soil, CSAs to classes, they’ve got you covered. Learn more about the farm and retail wagon here. Check out the current harvest menu here.
A HUGE heartfelt thank you goes to Leiah Muller, Sam Winfield, Megan Spivey and Sydney Winfield of Bloom Beauty Bar VA and to Kate Dooley of Kate’s Next Door Market for all of their hard work and generosity of spirit. We’re so grateful to have been a part of this year’s event and hope to join again next year. We’re quite humbled by and appreciative of Bloom’s very generous donation!
Bloom’s donation will help our Friends group to continue our mission to promote and support Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge in its mission to conserve, protect, and enhance natural resources through projects, advocacy, outreach, education, fundraising, diverse membership and volunteerism for the betterment of the Refuge. The Society, with the help of volunteers and refuge staff, has been hard at work on several projects – adding osprey nesting platforms, a new Visitor’s Service Center pollinator garden, and Chronolog photo stitching sites, just to name a few.
Thank you to all the volunteers and staff of Back Bay NWR who played an integral part in making this event a success. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Until next time,
See you down at the Refuge!
