  • Community outreach events including VB Winterfest and bi-annual bicycle rides in the refuge

  • Interpretive signage for pollinator and monarch gardens

  • Plant identification placards along the Reese F. Lukei, Jr. Raptor Trail
  • Installation of four citizen-science photo stations for Chronolog project
  • Pollinator garden installation surrounding The Visitor Center

  • Osprey nesting platform repairs and installation – assisted by Eagle Scout, Troop 442

Volunteer positions at the refuge include:

  • Blue Goose Tram Drivers/Interpreters: Drive and interpret the Blue Goose Wildlife Tram through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. This is a great opportunity for a volunteer pair, where one person drives and the other talks, but solo drivers are also needed!
  • Environmental Education Team Member: Enthusiastic volunteers are needed to assist with school field trips, children’s programs, lesson plan development, and guided tours of all types.
  • Trail Maintenance Coordinator: Lead a group of 5-10 volunteers for a monthly trail maintenance day. Activities include cutting back shrubs, trimming Phragmites, removing debris from trails, and light trail rehabilitation.
  • Facility Grounds Maintenance/Mowing: Operate the riding mower and/or other lawn tools to maintain Visitor Center grounds. The time commitment for this position is at least twice a month.
  • Habitat Management Tractor Operator: Operate heavy equipment, such as tractors with mowing and discing attachments, inside the wildlife refuge’s managed impoundment (water pool) system
  • Newsletter Input & Development: Write, edit, and/or organize information about the Refuge and Society.
  • Society Representation at Community Events: Attend community events; distribute flyers, rack cards, and membership forms.
